Now is a GREAT time for women to start practicing their legal rights in Pakistan.

But the trouble is that many Pakistani women (and men) aren’t even aware of their own legal rights. Well, two-time Academy Award Winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is out to set it right. She has launched an awareness campaign called ‘Aagahi’, that uses short animated videos to educate Pakistanis, especially the women, about their rights as a citizen. ‘Aagahi’ translates to awareness.

The first episode was released in September. It’s titled ‘How to Register an FIR’.

The second episode released a few weeks later, is about ‘Domestic Violence’. It identifies different forms of abuse and teaches women to recognize the tell-tale signs that they may be a victim.

The third one is ‘Domestic Violence II: How to Protect Yourself Against Domestic Violence’. The video teaches women how to protect themselves from domestic violence. It offers info on getting a protection order and seeking medical advice and refuge at a women’s shelter if needed.

The educational videos are no longer than 2-3 minutes and narrated in Urdu by Aaminah Sheikh. SOC Films is also working on releasing these videos in other regional languages of Pakistan. They explain and clarify the legislation and laws that affect women; and give an overview of how the legal provisions granted to them may be applied.

Future videos will focus on divorce, cyber-crimes and inheritance and the procedure for reporting issues like these and where to find help.

The latest video on the series is titled ‘Know your Nikahnama’.

This video highlights the important information that everyone should know before signing the nikah papers. It is a legally binding document yet very few women understand its clauses and their legal rights pertaining to this marriage document.

The video also offers contact info for helplines, counseling services, and legal support available to anyone who wants to learn more about their nikah nama.
